Very cool museum. It’s extremely informative and a great way to learn about witchcraft on the island.

It was better than expected.

It’ll take you roughly 30-45mins to get through if you’re reading the whole booklet.

They have a restaurant attached to the museum so you can eat there as well!

Das Hexenmuseum in Holmavík stellt Runenzeichen und Schriften vor, die voller Zaubersprüche sind. Im späten Mittelalter wurden in Island, besonders in den Westfjorden vor allem Männer (nur wenige Frauen) der Hexerei beschuldigt und viele verbrannt. Ihnen wurde einfach in die Schuhe geschoben, dass sie Schuld daran waren, wenn jemand erkrankte. Und die Überraschung war immer groß, wenn nach dem Verbrennen der Hexer die Leute immer noch krank waren. Dann wurde der nächste beschuldigt und der nächste ermordet. Sie hatten keine Chance, ihre Unschuld zu beweisen und es wurde auch oft ohne Rechtsprechung des Alþing gerichtet.
Das Museum gibt Hefte zum Lesen der Geschichten in ca. 12 Sprachen aus. So konnte ich mit diesen deutschen Erklärungen durchs Museum gehen und mir die isländischen Dokumente gut erschließen. Ich finde, diese runenartigen Hexensymbole und isländischen Texte haben eine unfassbare beeindruckende, aber auch wirklich magische und bedrückende Ausdruckskraft.

Un museu fascinant on el vel de la realitat es desdibuixa per revelar els secrets més profunds de la simbologia víkinga i els mites ancestrals de l’illa. Aquí, les ombres de la bruixeria i la màgia d’Islàndia es fan presents, mentre històries encantades i tràgiques s’entrellacen al teu voltant. A l’entrada, com si fos un grimori antic, et lliuren un llibret que, pas a pas i en múltiples llengües, desxifra els misteris del museu. Una parada imprescindible, especialment en dies plujosos o quan el fred et crida a buscar refugi en l’escalfor de la màgia antiga.

Amazing small museum with an attached restaurant. It's a short experience; we saw the entire exhibit and had lunch in about an hour and a half. Very interesting facts, and nice place.

Super interesting museum that you can go through relatively quickly.

It’s out of the way but that’s because Holmavik was the most active region in all of Iceland for witchcraft and witch hunts, making the museum all the more interesting.

Sehr schönes Ambiente bei dem man einen Kaffee genießen und in dem kleinen angrenzenden Shop stöbern kann.
Das Museum ist klein und fein und lädt zur Besichtigung mit unterschiedlicher Sprachführung ein.

I thought this place was so fascinating! It gives a very interesting glimpse into the history of the Westfjords. Yes, a lot of the stuff isn’t actual artifacts, but I didn’t care that much.

I didn’t care very much for the necropants. I’m not very surprised by them either as occult rituals involving the unalive exist in many cultures.

What I found especially fascinating is that in the face of harsh conditions and poverty, many of these people turned to witchcraft and sorcery. This is also a common tale across cultures, including in my home country (India). What makes it tougher in Iceland is that the land has always been sparsely populated and the elements are especially harsh here, so people tried many different ways to make ends meet.

The witch hunts here usually came about because of petty disputes between townspeople and neighbors, which usually resulted in the death of the accused.

Also very fascinating is that while witchcraft is typically associated with the “feminine”, many of the practitioners here were men!

If we approach this museum more as a history of the land, then it’s very, very interesting. That’s not to say that the magic isn’t real, because according to me, it certainly is!
